| It began as an underground explosion in the 80s. While disco was dying, house music was being born. A rhythmic combination of synthesized beats, house music is strongly influenced by soul and funk-infused beats. Characteristically, this style of music is a fusion of electronics and orchestra as a backdrop to uninhibited rhythms paired with socially charged or thought provoking lyrics. During the 1980s, house music was embraced by a culture of people looking for a brand new sound. Harry or "Harri" Dennis (affectionately called "Harry D." among his friends) was born a Sagittarian on Chicago's westside. His love of music was evident as a teen, often getting into parties at The Den One with his underage friends. While attending Illinois State University (where he graduated) , he took drama and literature courses along with required courses. Harry did well in college and discovered that he had a God-given talent for writing. And so, he decided to focus on developing his love of writing into a viable outlet for his creative and musical interests. Whenever he made a junket home during those college years, he partied at the Warehouse where he met DJ Frankie Knuckles. After graduation and while working in Chicago, his life took a different turn--he ran into an old friend named Ron Hardy. During that time of partying at the Music Box, they decided to take their love of music and create their own sound. Together, they created their first single, Donnie. Harry is the first house artist to integrate the spoken word with house beats. Harry is credited with creating the "deep house" sound. Donnie became an instant favorite among house enthusiasts in the 1990s. Donnie is considered today as a cult classic in house genre. Launched underground, it was written by Harry and mixed by Ron. Its popularity spread to the East Coast. Donnie was produced by DJ International in '85 and distributed internationally to be received with wide acclaim. While in the early stages of his career, Harry met another writer, Robert Owens. Together, Harry, Ron, Larry Heard and Chip Eberhart formed the group: The It (which produced his single, Donnie). The It group was named by Harry. Harry became the spokesman for The It and a principal lyricists and contributing vocalist on the album. In London, Gallimaufry Gallery. (another single by Larry and Harry) was recorded on the Black Market label. They returned to the States for a time and travelled back to London to record another album entitled The It On Top Of The World on the Big Life label. Other hits recorded were Brazilian Love Dance, Rain Forest Serenade, Endless Journey, Living For the Man, and In This Place Called Nowhere, to name a few. Some critics espoused that this album was Harry's best work! The album aptly illustrated his professional and creative growth as a lyricist and vocalist. Harry simultaneously worked with another musical artist, Marshall Jefferson. Harry was recruited to Trax Records by Marshall under the Trax label. They formed the group Jungle Wonz. As principal writer and lyricists, they recorded the hit singles, The Jungle , Time Marches On, and Bird in A Gilded Cage. Harry and Larry collaborated on Distant Planet under Fingers, Inc. Harry continues to collaborate and contribute his lyrical talents to the works of producer/musician Ron Trent of Ron Trent Music ASCAP, Larry Heard of Alleviated Records, Marshall Jefferson, as well as up and coming independent musical artists. Harry has released his most recent single, Urban Blues which can be found on www.YouTube.com. House music has evolved since its inception almost 20 years ago. Mixes and re-mixes of house, R&B, and contemporary tracks have created an eclectic library of house music that is reminiscent of the founding artistic works started by Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. It illustrates the creative energy of newer artists who recognize the beauty and timeless element of house music. So, if you are a "house" enthusiast, there are plenty of house grooves to satisfy your appetite. Original and remixed versions of Harry's singles can be found via searches on the worldwide web. His deep lyrics and commanding vocals will withstand the test of time and cross over generations to come. Harry's discography may be found on www.wikipedia.com. |
